A Solar Hot Water system also referred to as Solar Thermal creates hot water by using the sun’s heat. A typical evacuated tube consists of a copper rod in a vacuum with heat reflective coating around the outside of the tube. Copper is a great heat conductor and as it heats up it transfers its heat via the manifold to a liquid such as glycol, which has a low freezing point and good heat transference properties. The glycol is then pumped through a secondary heating coil in the hot water cylinder. A Solar Thermal system can heat the glycol well in excess of 100ºC and this heat energy is then transferred to heat your water.
